One of the regular menu items that are always served at drinking parties is the ‘liver’ health issue. Among them, for office workers who drink a lot, alcoholic fatty liver disease appears on the regular menu during health checkups. Fatty liver refers to when the proportion of fat in the liver exceeds 5%.
For this reason, it is easy to think of fatty liver as a disease caused by excessive drinking. However, fatty liver often occurs even if you do not drink alcohol at all or drink very little alcohol. This is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
In particular, recently, the number of cases of fatty liver disease developing even without alcohol consumption has been increasing due to westernized eating habits and lack of exercise. In fact, according to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease increased from 310,000 in 2018 to 400,000 in 2022, while the number of patients with alcoholic fatty liver disease decreased from 120,000 to 106,000 during the same period, making it worse than alcoholic fatty liver disease. It appears that there are many patients with alcoholic fatty liver disease.
The most common cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is obesity. Even if you are of normal weight, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can occur if you have abdominal obesity. Additionally, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is highly likely to occur if there are metabolic abnormalities such as hyperglycemia, high blood pressure, and dyslipidemia. In addition, when fat is deposited in the liver due to insulin resistance, excessive fat and sugar intake, drug use, and genetic factors are also considered causes.
The main symptoms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease include pain in the right upper abdomen, fatigue, and general malaise.
The problem is that it is often left unnoticed because it does not show any significant symptoms. However, in most cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the course is good, but regarding 10% of cases progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer, so management is necessary.
Director Kim Gyeong-eop of Barunsol Internal Medicine (gastroenterology specialist) said, “If you have alcoholic fatty liver disease, you can reduce your drinking, but the problem is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.” He added, “Above all, since no special treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has been developed to date, a healthy lifestyle “Preventing obesity is the first step in treatment,” he explained.
He continued, “If you currently have obesity or abdominal obesity, you need to control your weight through lifestyle changes. To lose weight, do aerobic exercise such as cycling, jogging, swimming, or hiking at least three times a week, once a week. It must be performed for more than 30 minutes. Meals should mainly consist of low-calorie foods, and it is advisable to maintain regular eating habits and reduce the amount of food consumed. “It is also advisable to avoid late-night snacks and overeating,” he added.
However, rapid weight loss can put a strain on the body or worsen fatty liver disease, so it is important to slowly lose regarding 10% of your current body weight over 3 to 6 months.
