What is a lipoma and why does it appear?

“Lipoma is an enlargement and expansion of fat cells in the subcutaneous fat, which leads to the formation of a tumor. It is often called a wen,” says surgeon Gennady Volkov. — Lipomas are especially common in people over 40 years of age in the head, neck or shoulder area. In men – slightly more often than in women. Doctors do not yet know why lipoma develops. But it is known for sure that excess weight, poor diet and high levels of lipids in the blood do not lead to lipoma. Therefore, diets, massages and ointments will not affect the size of the tumor.”

According to the Mayo Clinic (USA), lipomas often appear following injury, although doctors do not know whether this is the cause of their formation. In addition, doctors suggest that heredity may play a role. Lipoma also appears in patients suffering from rare Madelung disease, when fatty tissue grows in the neck area.

“In most cases, lipomas are harmless. However In one patient out of a hundred, a lipoma may be malignant “This is a liposarcoma, which, unlike a regular lipoma, grows very quickly, hurts when pressed and fuses with the surrounding tissues,” says surgeon Volkov.

Only surgery can get rid of lipoma. However, if it is small in size, this fatty tumor can also be removed under local anesthesia.”
