The convex lens-shaped structure inside the eye is called the lens. The lens is one of the important organs in maintaining normal vision. From birth to middle age, the lens maintains transparency, but with age, clouding (nuclear sclerosis) occurs or cataracts, a pathological condition, sometimes occur. Another scary disease that can occur in the lens is lens dislocation.

Lens dislocation occurs when the structures that hold the lens collapse. A normal lens is held by green lens zonules, as shown in the picture below. It is also connected to the ciliary body, one of the structures that make up the black eye. When the shape of the ciliary body changes, the shape of the lens also changes, allowing fine adjustment of focus, which is important for accurate vision.

However, if the ligaments that hold the lens are partially damaged, it can cause lens instability, in which the axis of the lens is twisted. Also, when it is completely cut off, lens dislocation occurs, in which the lens moves out of its original position.

The dislocated lens falls to the front or back of the eye, which is called anterior chamber dislocation and posterior dislocation, respectively. Occasionally, an older animal whose eyes have become cloudy but has been doing well may suddenly see a clear center in the pupil. This may be because the clouded lens has fallen into the space behind the eye where it is not visible from the front.

On the other hand, anterior chamber dislocation that falls forward can cause acute glaucoma and must be treated quickly because it causes persistent eye pain and structural damage. At this time, correction may be performed through lens removal surgery to quickly lower intraocular pressure to reduce eye pain and maintain vision longer, or to relieve anterior chamber dislocation by returning the lens to the posterior chamber.

(Left) Anterior chamber dislocation. Confirm that the lens is located in the front, covering the black area. (Middle) Lens dislocation corrected following the procedure. The empty space between the pupil and the lens is identified at the 10 o’clock position. (Right) Posterior dislocation. You can see that the cloudy lens has moved back and the pupil has become clearer.

Lens dislocation has a poor vision prognosis, so if your eye color suddenly appears different, you need immediate ophthalmological treatment. Lens dislocation, which can damage the eye, is one of the emergency diseases. I hope this will help you get treatment with a quick and accurate diagnosis.
