Understanding Hardware RAID Storage: Features, Benefits, and ICY Dock Product Options

What is hardware RAID storage?

Hardware RAID (Array of Independent Disks) is a method of combining multiple hard drives or solid-state drives (SSD) into a single storage unit for the purpose of improving performance, data backup, or a combination of both. Unlike software RAID, which relies on the operating system for management and processing, hardware RAID uses a controller unit with a built-in RAID chip to manage the disk array.

Next, we will introduce the operating principle of hardware RAID:
Hardware RAID controller: The hardware RAID controller is independent of the host operating system and uses a dedicated chip to manage the RAID disk array. This controller can be a standalone expansion card installed in a computer’s PCIe slot, or it can be integrated into a server or storage device in a hard drive tray.

RAID Levels: Like software RAID, hardware RAID supports various RAID levels, each providing a different balance between performance, backup, and storage capacity. Common RAID levels include RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, etc.

Performance: In hardware RAID, the controller manages data striping (splitting data across multiple hard drives) and RAID levels using parity. Offloading processing tasks to dedicated hardware can lead to better performance compared to software RAID.

Backup: Hardware RAID provides backup by backing up stored data on multiple hard drives, allowing the system to recover from the failure of one or more hard drives without losing data. The level of backup depends on the selected RAID level.

Hot-swappable: Many hardware RAID controllers support hot-swap, which means you can replace a failed hard drive with a new one while the system is running. There is no need to power down the server. The controller will automatically rebuild the data to the new one. on the hard drive.

Operating system independence: Hardware RAID does not rely on the host operating system’s drivers or software, which is very beneficial when you need to change or upgrade the operating system without affecting the RAID configuration.
