This November 14, at the PMI Leonetti in Noisy-le-Grand, we are talking regarding “hidden sugars”, “food groups”, and meal frequency. We also give each other tips and tricks for cooking balanced… and inexpensively. Exchanges in all simplicity and conviviality, to discuss an important subject: gestational diabetes and its consequences for women and their children.
No injunctions…
It was, in fact, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day that the PMI service launched its first workshop to raise awareness of the nutrition of pregnant women. A very successful launch, rejoices Valérie Clin, midwife at PMI, who co-hosted this workshop. “The feedback from the participants was very positive,” she says. “One of them told us that she was a little worried when she arrived, because she cannot read and has difficulty understanding French.” Concerns are quickly resolved thanks to very visual and fun awareness-raising tools, accessible to all, but also thanks to the sharing of each person’s experiences and culinary cultures. “We are not here to say “You have to do this”, “You have to be very careful with this” or even “This food is completely forbidden when you are pregnant”. Our role is to inform, to answer questions but always starting from and taking into account the culinary habits and traditions of each participant”, insists Nathalie Tacafred, childcare worker who participated in the development of the support activity initiated by a dietetics student doing an internship in this PMI center. Building on this first success, the PMI service intends to repeat these workshops, but also to systematize this type of initiative throughout the Seine-Saint-Denis region.
…And no fatality
“Our childcare assistant and doctor colleagues who took part in this first workshop also shared their enthusiasm with us. We ultimately all learned something from each other through these exchanges,” concludes Valérie Clin. Building on this first success, the PMI service intends not only to repeat these workshops, but also to systematize this type of initiative on the the entire territory of Seine-Saint-Denis. An essential action because, over the past fifteen years, a sharp increase in cases of gestational diabetes has been noted by the Regional Health Observatory, particularly in Seine-Saint-Denis. A public health problem that the Department and its partners are tackling head on. Because gestational diabetes is not inevitable.
