Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — A new mutant, EG.5, of the highly variable “Covid-19” virus is spreading in many countries, the latest of which is Egypt, in parallel with scientists’ rush to understand its spread and the extent of our immunity’s ability to confront it. But what do we know regarding its symptoms and who are the groups most at risk?
The new variant had more than 30 mutations in the amino acid of its elevated protein compared to its closest predecessor: the BA.2 subtype of Omicron.
EG.5 is a descendant of XBB, which is currently the dominant variant in the United States, causing regarding 20% of all newly registered COVID-19 cases in the country.
Clinically, this variant does not appear to cause different or more severe symptoms than the viruses that preceded it. Among its most common symptoms are:
A high fever, a new loss of taste or smell, or trouble breathing. Headache, malaise, runny nose, cough or sore throat, muscle pain
Scientists are still looking for other possible symptoms.
However, it should be noted that the extent to which the average person is affected by the new virus infection may vary depending on the number of previous infections with one or more mutants, and the vaccination status.
The target groups are the elderly and patients with underlying medical conditions such as chronic lung, kidney and heart problems. These people should ensure that they are aware of the latest developments regarding booster doses and take the necessary preventive measures, and communicate with health care providers.
In the above infographic, a reminder of the most common symptoms that an individual may experience if he is infected with the new variant of the Corona virus.
