[파이낸셜뉴스] Warts are a disease caused by infection of the skin or mucous membranes with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which usually occurs in the spring to summer when the temperature rises.

Warts, which occur in the form of bumpy papules on the surface, occur anywhere on the skin, but mainly occur on the hands, feet, legs, face, and also occur on the genitals through sexual contact. Depending on the site of occurrence, it is divided into common warts, plantar warts, flat warts, and anogenital warts.

Since warts are contagious, it is important to seek medical attention immediately if you have a lesion to prevent spreading it to others.

Possibility of misunderstanding with warts and corns

Warts most commonly appear as raised, rough surfaces on the backs of the hands, around the fingernails, and on the face. Repeat cryotherapy by spraying liquid nitrogen on the surrounding normal skin, including the wart, using a cryospray to freeze and thaw. In most cases, it is necessary to repeat the treatment several times or more at intervals of 2 to 3 weeks.

Plantar warts may look like corns because they are pressed by weight, but it is not easy to differentiate between plantar warts and corns. If there is a difference from corns, warts are more painful when grasped than when pressed, and if the stratum corneum on the surface is shaved off, the center is not hard, and several black dots caused by thrombotic capillaries can be seen or petechial bleeding may occur.

Since warts are caused by infection with HPV, they often occur regardless of the area where shoes touch or weight is placed, and they tend to be multiple lesions. When the virus spreads to the surroundings, a large wart in the center and small wart lesions surrounding the large wart lesion fuse to form a large plate, which is also called mosaic wart.

Flat warts can occur all over the body and appear as yellow lesions that are slightly raised or flat than the surrounding normal skin.

It can be removed with a laser, and recurrence is common. Anogenital warts occur through sexual contact and may occur in a pointed shape as a disease or as a papule with a size of 2 to 3 mm. Immunotherapy using laser treatment or topical application may be considered.

A definitive diagnosis is a biopsy… “It needs to be treated quickly”

Warts can be diagnosed clinically, but a biopsy may be performed for a more definitive diagnosis.

Medical staff advise that since warts cause discomfort when walking or grabbing objects depending on the part of the body where they occur and can spread to others through contact, early treatment before the lesion spreads and worsens can increase the cure rate and reduce the recurrence rate.

Lee Un-ha, a professor of dermatology at Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital, emphasized, “It can spread through contact, so if a lesion occurs, be careful not to touch or pick it off, and it is important to see a dermatologist as soon as possible and receive treatment.” Professor Lee said, “For hand warts, it is recommended to use hand sanitizer before direct contact such as shaking hands with others. It is recommended,” he said.

Warts have a high recurrence rate, so treatment must be maintained for at least 3 months in some cases, and even if the symptoms have improved, steady management is required, so regular medical treatment is required until the disease is completely cured.
