Anyone who notices a lump on their thighs will probably sooner or later wonder what it is – and whether there is cause for concern. If the bump feels soft or rubbery and slides easily under the skin, it may be a harmless lipoma. Lipomas are quite common in adults and can appear anywhere there is fatty tissue. The body areas most commonly affected include the torso, shoulders, neck and armpits. But a lipoma on the thigh is not uncommon either.
What is a thigh lipoma?
A thigh lipoma is a benign tumor that arises from fatty tissue. Its interior consists of fat cells, its covering of connective tissue. There is not enough research on why some people develop lipomas. It is clear that lipomas are benign, i.e. they do not multiply uncontrollably and do not form metastases. This distinguishes them from malignant tumors. Lipomas do grow, but usually slowly. They do not proliferate destructively into the surrounding tissue, as is usual with cancer. Normally, a lipoma is no more than five centimeters thick. While there are large lipomas that measure more than 20 centimeters in diameter, these are extreme exceptions.
In the majority of those affected, it remains with a single lipoma. A special case are so-called lipomatosis. This is what experts call various diseases in which many fatty tumors develop in different parts of the body. The tumors are often larger than is typical for individual lipomas. What to do regarding a lipoma on the thigh?
A bump on the thigh is a case for the dermatologist. Because first of all it is important to clarify whether it is really a lipoma or rather another type of tumor.
If the lump turns out to be a harmless lipoma, no countermeasures are usually necessary. A lipoma does not require treatment unless it bothers you. However, depending on its location and size, a lipoma can cause pain or get in the way of getting dressed. In this case, it may make sense to have it removed.
How to get rid of a thigh lipoma?
There are various methods available for removing a lipoma on the thigh. The classic method is a minor operation in which the tumor is excised along with the covering.
Alternatively, some surgeons offer to remove the lipoma as part of liposuction or with a so-called fat-away-syringe. These have the advantage that no skin incision is necessary, so no scar is to be expected. However, they also have significant disadvantages.
