And it does not necessarily take a break at the weekend… “During the weekend, the risk factors likely to trigger a crisis can combine and reinforce each other, with the major cause being sudden withdrawal of caffeine, from tea or coffee,” says Dr. Carole Sereni, neurologist, author of Les mots de la migraine (ed. du cerf).
“Studies show that seven out of ten migraine sufferers, lovers of coffee or morning tea during the week, have an attack on the weekend when they reduce or delay their consumption, underlines the specialist. This is not the case for non- migraine sufferer.” The reason ? The benefit of the vasoconstrictor, and therefore anti-migraine, effect of caffeine is delayed by a later breakfast. “Several patients have solved the problem by ringing their alarm clock at the usual time to drink a coffee, before going back to sleep to wake up in good shape later”, indicates the neurologist. But the caffeine is not the only cause: “Migraineurs are more sensitive than the rest of the population to variations in their sleep duration, adds Dr. Sereni. A shortened or prolonged night may be enough to induce an attack, but not same way, without us really knowing what is at stake chronobiological.
