[아이뉴스24 강일 기자] More than 120,000 new cases of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis are diagnosed in Koreans every year, and the number has increased more than 10-fold over the past 12 years.
People with fatty liver must carefully monitor whether or not the disease progresses to steatohepatitis. The team led by Professors Lee Nam-heon of Daejeon University Cheonan Oriental Medicine Hospital and Professor Son Chang-gyu of Daejeon Oriental Medicine Hospital is conducting a study from 2010 to 2021 to learn regarding the diagnosis status of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in Koreans in clinical settings. We analyzed health insurance statistics for Koreans until 2018.
According to the analysis results, more than 120,000 new non-alcoholic steatohepatitis patients are diagnosed every year in Korea, increasing more than 10 times over 12 years.
This is due to the increase in the number of patients, but it is also presumed that the increase in the number of patients receiving treatment as the importance of medical awareness increases is also reflected as a factor.
In addition, although non-alcoholic steatohepatitis patients are more common in men overall, the incidence rate in women patients is higher at the age of 60 or older.

Professors Lee Nam-heon and Son Chang-gyu of Daejeon University Oriental Medicine Hospital, who led the study, said, “This is a result that clearly shows the status of patients in Korea with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which is a problem as a disease of modern people, through statistics, and it is a great opportunity for the prevention and development of treatments for fatty liver disease in the future.” “It has great significance as important data,” he said.
