Understanding and Managing Scabies: Risks, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

An increase in cases of scabies has been noted in recent years throughout Europe, and there are regular cases in Belgium. Since October, outbreaks of scabies have been spotted in schools in Binche and Soignies, in Hainaut, report our colleagues at Sudinfo.

Scabies is a skin infection caused by a tiny 8-legged parasite that belongs to the mite family. It’s called the sarcoptus. This highly contagious disease causes itching of the skin, which is worse at night. Contamination occurs through direct and prolonged skin contact.

Due to this return, Wallonia recently decided to include, as was already the case in other regions, scabies among the obligatory notifiable diseases as soon as there are two or more cases linked to each other.

When in doubt, always go to your doctor

“For several years we have noticed an increase in cases of scabies in Wallonia, Flanders and in Europe in general. And so, it was obvious to us that we were going to have to follow this development, but also be able to provide the necessary advice to infected people. When you have a doubt, you always go to your doctor. It is he who will obviously declare the illness. However, anyone who has a doubt can contact Aviq.” explains Lara Kotlar, spokesperson for the Walloon Agency for Quality Life.

You can contact them by telephone by dialing 0800/16 061. Information is also available on the Aviq website.

Please note that this disease is relatively mild if treated seriously. Treatment may combine ointment and medication. Scabies can affect all ages and socio-economic backgrounds.
