Among the most diagnosed diseases worldwide is cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this condition is the leading cause of death in the world, being lung, breast, colon and rectal the most relevant.

“Cancer is the main cause of death in the world: in 2020 almost 10 million deaths were attributed to this disease, that is, almost one in six of those registered,” according to the WHO.

Cancer usually presents as a silent disease, ideally it should be diagnosed on time and at an early stage in order to seek the best treatment for each patient, in order to preserve their life, since when the malignant tumor is diagnosed in advanced stage, the chances of the patient making it out alive are slim. The stages of cancer and the progression of the disease will depend on the type and can last for months or decades.

When cells age, are damaged or die, they are replaced by new ones. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, it means that one of those cells did not do their usual job and instead of being replaced by another, they multiplied. These atoms can form what are known as tumors, which can be benign or malignant.

Although this type of condition is not so common, it can also arise in the eyes. The American Cancer Society explains that cancer cells in the eye can sometimes travel to the liver and grow there, even though eye cancer spreads to the liver (or anywhere else), it is still called eye cancer.

The aforementioned type of cancer begins in the middle layer of the eye. The main signs that can alert a patient to the possibility of eye cancer are: changes in vision (things appear blurry or the patient suddenly cannot see), specks (spots or scribbles are perceived), flashes of light , a dark spot on the iris that is growing, change in the size or shape of the pupil, and redness or swelling of the eye.

In order to determine the treatment, it is essential to know the stage or phase of the type of eye cancer that the patient is presenting, which will be determined when it is known how much the cancer has grown or if it has spread to other areas of the eye or of the body.

To manage this condition, the well-known radiotherapy is used. “Radiation is often delivered by placing small radiation seeds in the eyeball near the tumor. This is called brachytherapy or plaque therapy.”
