A recent study that lasted for three decades and was published by The Lancet scientific journal indicated an unprecedented increase in the number of people with anemia in the world. According to the study, the prevalence rates were in younger age groups and among women compared to men.
A quarter of the world’s population suffers from anemia, with a sharp increase in infections among women, mothers, young girls and children under five years of age.
A three-decade study shows the huge gap in access to health care and good nutrition in different parts of the world.
The study conducted by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, IHME, which specializes in scientific research in Seattle, USA, indicated that the high rates of anemia or anemia reached record numbers, at a rate of 24 million cases during those years.
According to the evaluation, more than 31% of women suffer from anemia compared to 17.5% of men, and the difference was more evident during the reproductive years of women.
According to the researchers, anemia is a serious health condition, as it can cause death for regarding 20% of mothers following childbearing age.
Gynecological disorders, maternal bleeding and failure to provide quality health care in the months following childbirth are among the most common causes of anemia in women.
As for children, infection with worms, malaria, tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes more than 40% of children to suffer from anemia in developing countries.
The researchers point to another serious factor that causes anemia, which is iron deficiency anemia, which is also a serious problem that greatly affects the cognitive and cognitive development of children and can cause psychological and physical exhaustion for adults.
Severe anemia affects 42% of children and impairs their cognitive awareness and physical development.
On this subject, a consultant cardiologist and circulatory specialist, Dr. Hani Sabbour, explains in an interview with the program the morning On Sky News Arabia:
• Anemia is divided into two types:
1. Dietary type, which is the loss of iron and vitamin B12.
2. A second type, which is hereditary, such as sickle cell anemia and others.
• Anemia is more common in women, especially pregnant women, due to iron deficiency.
• Iron deficiency causes hair loss, rapid heart rate, dizziness, extreme fatigue and exhaustion.
• Iron deficiency can be treated by selecting an integrated diet or by replacing iron in the event of a pathological condition.
• Anemia differs in children, so it is necessary to ensure that it is not of a hereditary type.
• One of the signs of a child suffering from anemia is tiredness, extreme exhaustion when playing, and a pale color of the face.
• 30 percent of people can get anemia at some point in their lives.
Ways and methods of dealing with anemia:
• The need to see a doctor.
• Determine the type of anemia with the doctor.
• B12 deficiency is common among some diabetics, due to the nature of some of the medications they take, which cause B12 to be absorbed into the body.
• Iron can be replaced in the body through two methods of taking iron pills, which may cause waste in the patient.
• Stopping blood transfusions for patients who suffer from severe iron deficiency and replacing it by administering iron nutrients in the bone marrow.
• The need to focus on healthy eating.
• Ensure to include important nutrients during the diet period.
• Red meat and its derivatives are among the most important sources of iron, along with some leafy vegetables.
• Periodic loss of iron in women or loss due to the digestive system in men.
