Swelling in the legs, intense pain and spider veins that are very aesthetically disturbing – these are the main complaints of those who suffer from varicose veins, a condition that mainly affects the lower limbs. This is a common circulatory disease, which is characterized by permanent and irreversible dilation of superficial pathways. The appearance is dilated and tortuous veins, bluish or reddish in color, which appear along the leg.
Contrary to what many think, these veins are not obstructed, but dilated. Therefore, blood flows more slowly through these vessels, explains vascular surgeon and president of the Bahia Association of Angiologist Medicine, César Amorim. Anyone who has noticed the problem at other times of the year suffers more in the summer. According to a survey carried out by the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV), complaints of these symptoms in the leg rise from 20% to 30% during the season.
