The actor José Mayer made a post, last Friday (3/3), saying that he was hospitalized once more to make the penultimate infusion of the treatment of the autoimmune disease Wegener’s granulomatosis. The artist has been fighting the painting, which has no cure, since 2017. In the video, he says he follows the condition recovery protocol.
Wegener’s granulomatosis is an autoimmune inflammation of blood vessels caused by vasculitis. It is considered rare, and affects one in every 30,000 people. “The pathology affects tissues of the nose, sinuses, throat, lungs or kidneys. The disease has an unknown cause and affects men and women aged 40 years and older.
Symptoms
Usually, the condition affects the airways first. The actor said he felt an indisposition that made him seek medical help and arrive at the diagnosis. The first symptoms of Wegener’s Granulomatosis are:
- Nasal congestion;
- Nose deformity;
- Sinusitis;
- Hoarseness;
- Inflammation in the ear, which can lead to hearing loss;
- Cough that may contain blood;
- Wheezing when breathing.
The autoimmune disease causes clusters of immune cells (called granulomas) that cause inflammation, form nodules, and can destroy normal tissue. Left untreated, Wegener’s granulomatosis can result in bleeding in the lungs, development of arthritis, nerve damage, skin sores, kidney failure and the development of blood clots.
Treatment
Immunosuppressants and corticosteroids are used to decrease inflammation in people with Wegener’s granulomatosis. With treatment, approximately 75% of patients achieve complete remission of the disease.
Individuals with the condition need constant medical monitoring to check that the medication dosage is adequate, for side effects, risk of infection and, during remission, for signs of relapse.
