Underdogs Unleashed: Italy’s Quest for World Cup Glory in 2023

A nation to always watch, Italy will still be underdogs at the 2023 World Cup. The Squadra Azzurra have unveiled an expanded roster of 16 players to seek a medal in Japan this summer.

The years pass but Italy remains a nation never to be underestimated. At the last EuroBasket, our transalpine neighbors had created a sensation by eliminating Serbia, one of the favorite teams of the competition before failing in nothing once morest the French team in the quarter-finals.

On paper, perhaps a little less talented than other more referenced nations, but on the ground always the same grit and the same aggressiveness to win matches. For this 2023 World Cup, Italy still has a good scratching head. Gianmarco Pozzecco’s men are looking for their first medal in almost 20 years. It was at the 2004 Olympic Games and the man who now leads the team was on the field then!

Not favorite, Italy will still present a very interesting group, between youth, talent and experience.

We find some names that we might see in the NBA like Nicco Mannion, Niccolo Melli but also Simone Fontecchio, the Jazz winger who had been resplendent at the last EuroBasket despite his crack once morest France. Luigi Datome, the captain and the soul of this team is obviously on the trip. Four players will need to be removed from the roster for a final roster of twelve names.

In the radius of absences, Danilo Gallinari is not present following his white season due to injuries. Paolo Banchero decided to play for Team USA and Darius Thompson, long hoped for, might not obtain the documents for his naturalization (he is American by birth) in time. It therefore remains at the dock before potentially participating in the Olympic Games next year.

Italy are placed in Group A with Angola, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines, one of the host nations of the competition.
