Record playing time undead Taking American death metal as the spearhead. They formed in Rochester, New York, in 2018 and have since released two demos and two albums – with titles as long and complex as they can get, but lyrics that are anything but friendly. Meanwhile, guitarist Kyle Beam has recently made a point of making the songs more catchy despite their extremes, defining them more clearly and giving them an exciting character. This is exactly what works “Crazier” From the first second to the last.
A perfect example of this approach can be found towards the end of the record: “Bones Cluttering In The Cave” combines technical demands and brutal clarity in a wild track that’s somewhere between a stomper and an uncompromising death machine Rattling – very morbid and demanding, yet surprisingly simple. The Undead master this rare balancing act with exhilarating courage. This time around, the first video version of “Brandish The Blade” relies entirely on fantasy lyrics and unravels a kind of chorus with a little hook that comes out of nowhere. This even gets you closer to melodic death and death thrash territory without ever leaving the usual channels – which is a real trick.
The sawed-out guitar at the beginning of “Cramped Caskets (Necrology)” creates an old-school rockabilly vibe with a touch of Florida flirtation that incorporates techno and brutal scenes but still remains quintessentially undead – a heavy, Funky rock music with an addictive element. “Dead From Beyond” opens the mouth of hell, changing rhythms with wild screams celebrating the decaying death of the Undead. The title track then spins, coming full circle, celebrating the ultimate flawless madness of “Disattachment Of A Prophyctic In The Brain”. Horror movie riffs, a large cast of protagonists and a few pauses are all incorporated into the picture.
It’s not a major revolution, but a successful tweak: Undeath gives their ten songs more identity not only on a lyrical level but also on a musical level, which really helps the process. It’s a dynamic album without being cookie-cutter, exploring different types of death metal but always sounding like undead metal. “More Insane” is certainly crazier, becoming insane in perspective, but still bites you right away – it’s a truly sick and unruly treat, and the American quintet’s best work to date.
