Jennifer Mitchell is almost 5,000 miles away when she learns her son is dead. The search for ‘why’ leads them to find God, skydive and sue two of the most powerful social media corporations around.

Ian Ezquerra spends the last seconds of his life on Snapchat. The 16-year-old uploaded three videos of himself sticking a cartridge into a silver revolver, turning the cylinder, holding the gun to his temple and pulling the trigger. Twice the Russian roulette goes well. In the third video he notices that the bullet lands in the firing chamber. “If I pull the trigger now, I’m dead,” he says. The fourth video is never uploaded.

Ian dies on August 14, 2019 from a single shot in the head with his father’s gun. His cell phone is found next to him. For the police, the answer is obvious: a teenager who committed suicide. The case is quickly closed.
