Rumors about Vladimir Putin’s death have been making the rounds on the Internet for a few weeks now. It has also been rumored for some time that lookalikes of the Russian president are being used in public appearances.
The Japanese television station “TBS” has now taken a closer look at the theories: using the latest AI techniques, it examined the face and body movements of various images of Putin (or his doppelgangers).
The results: The real Putin is said to have held the “Victory Day” parade in Moscow in May. But a different Putin appears to have inspected the Crimean bridge last year: the AI found only a 53 percent match between the two.
“TBS” has discovered another case: Putin’s visit to the Ukrainian front in Mariupol also appears to have been covered by a doppelganger. There, artificial intelligence only finds a 40 percent agreement with Putin’s “Victory Day.”
“Facial recognition experts would, in most cases, call this a ‘mismatch’. This leads us to believe that it could be a double,” said the broadcaster. This detailed analysis makes the doppelganger rumors a lot more credible.
After a speech by Russia’s former intelligence chief, rumors about Putin’s death grew louder. In it he spoke about Putin in the past tense.
The rumors circulated mainly on the messaging app “Telegram”: It was also written there that Putin’s body was being kept in the refrigerator in his Valdai Palace. The Russian president is said to have died of a heart attack on October 26th.
It is impossible to confirm what the rumors are. But the fact is that the Kremlin leaders have made a clear statement about the rumors: President Vladimir Putin is not dead. Such a clear statement from the Russian government is rare.
Doppelgangers are not uncommon in politics. Joseph Stalin, the former dictator of the Soviet Union, also worked with an actor. Saddam Hussein, Fidel Casto and Winston Churchill have also been replaced with look-alikes at some public appearances, reports “the sun”.
