The investigation into the events of August 18 which led to the death of Domenico D’atria (30 years old) following an altercation with a police officer in Oupeye, is continuing. And following the police officer’s hearing on Thursday, it is those of several witnesses who are now revealed.
As a reminder, while police officers were trying to subject Domenico to a traffic check, rue Perreau in Oupeye, a (gradual) refusal to comply would therefore have led to this (fatal) shooting of a young police officer, who says he acted in a state of of self-defense. This Friday, September 1, the day following the revelations relating to the hearing of the police officer who shot Domenico, the Liège prosecution communicated through the voice of its spokesperson, Catherine Collignon. And the hearing of the witnesses seems to completely corroborate the statements of the police officers heard. This is why “at this stage of the investigation”, specifies the spokesperson, “the thesis of self-defense is that favored by the Liège prosecution”.
A dozen witnesses
Several witnesses were therefore heard, around ten according to the prosecution, as part of this investigation… “witnesses who made themselves known or who were identified”, specifies Catherine Collignon, “some thus witnessed the conduct of the victim [NDLR : Domenico] before the exchange with the police, others witnessed the exchange with the police and others finally at the shooting of the police”. In all cases, we confirm, “the testimony of the police is corroborated”. Both at the level of dangerous driving and therefore at the level of the refusal to obey the injunctions or the determination of the victim not to submit.
As a reminder, following being ordered to stop several times and while trying to flee on his quad, Domenico D’atria allegedly ran into a police officer, even doing a wheelie and knocking over the police officer in passing. Among the witnesses heard in recent hours, that of a person who seems to confirm the intention to harm the policeman: “At the time of the events, I thought that the driver of the quad wanted to kill the policeman”, literally indicates this witness , “he would have liked to do it that he would not have done otherwise”.
Toxicological analysis
At this stage, investigators are still awaiting the results of Domenico D’atria’s toxicological analysis. Results that might prove to be interesting, as it comes back from the testimonies that the victim seemed “determined not to be challenged”. During the events, the young man was also in possession of cannabis. And Catherine Collignon to specify that toxicological analyzes were also carried out on the police officers who intervened that day.
Another expected report, that of the automotive expert. At this stage, we are confirmed at the Liège public prosecutor’s office that “traces of contact that might be related to the crossing of a dressed body lying on the ground” were observed under the quad; which would also corroborate the scenario of the policeman knocked down by the quad.
As a reminder, the police officer struck suffered numerous bruises and was unable to work for a month.
