Uncovering the Secrets of Saint Lambert’s Skeleton: Autopsy Results Revealed at Liège Cathedral

In Liège, the autopsy of the skeleton of Saint Lambert revealed its secrets. Partial results because only one bone out of 10 remained from the skeleton of the founder of Liège preserved in the cathedral shrine. It is therefore difficult for Philippe Boxho, the pathologist who autopsied him, to draw definitive conclusions on the physical appearance, age, weight, and size of Saint Lambert. The forensic doctor had to remain at the hypothesis stage. Yesterday evening, at Liège Cathedral, he presented the results of the autopsy.

“The entire thoracic segment is missing, and both upper limbs are missing” explained Philippe Boxho. “We only have part of the pelvis. We can’t draw big conclusions when all that is missing. One of Saint Lambert’s femurs would be in Maastricht. The other femur would be in the Vatican. And it would be interesting to go and see: one, to check if they have the same tone, even if only the same color as the skeleton that we have here. Two, to measure them because if we have complete femurs, we will be able to check the stature, and also check, – because there we might have jokes –, that we do not have two right femurs or two left femurs which are one on one side, the other on the other, that these are many complementary femora and the same size.”

As for the causes of the murdered bishop’s death, the damaged piece of skull seems to confirm the story as we know it: the assassin hit Lambert in the head.
