Uncovering the Secrets of Castle Moha: Archaeological Excavations Unveil Medieval Treasures and Mysterious Burial

The feudal castle of Moha, which occupied a strategic location in medieval times, has been the subject of archaeological excavations since 2020. These excavations, carried out with the support of the Walloon Heritage Agency (AWaP), aim to learn more regarding the origins of the castle built between the 11th and 14th centuries on a rocky outcrop at the confluence of the Mehaigne and the Fosseroule.

The bones were therefore discovered under the old castral chapel dismantled in 1826 during excavations carried out for the third consecutive year by the archaeologist of the non-profit organization assisted by students from the universities of Namur and Liège who were doing an internship during the month July, the statement said.

The “well-preserved” skeleton, according to the archaeologists, of a child buried according to the Christian rites in force in the Middle Ages rested in a pit dug on the ground under the circulation level of the chapel. A coin dating from the reign of Louis VIII (1223-1226) or Louis IX (1226-1270) was also found in the filling of the pit.

“This artefact alone does not, however, allow us to date the burial period with certainty”, it is underlined. A carbon 14 dating will therefore be carried out in the coming months as well as an exhaustive anthropological study in order to determine the causes of death or possible pathologies before possible exposure, adds the press release.
