Uncovering the Cause: Investigating Pseudomonas aeruginosa Contamination in Flow’s Newly Opened Pool

Flow specifies in a message on its site that the biological value of the bacterium “Pseudomonas aeruginosa” is too high. Following a water test, Flow therefore had to close its doors only a few days after opening. “The current situation is on the one hand a huge learning opportunity, but on the other hand it is an opportunity that we would have gladly done without,” adds Flow.

3 tracks for Flow

The origin of the bacteria’s high value is not yet known, but the organization is considering three avenues.

First, the bacteria were already present in the recycled materials the pool used, such as the pipes. Flow, however, cleaned the piping and the pool and therefore considers this assumption to be irrelevant.

The second hypothesis concerns the filtering system, which would be the cause of the problem, but the organization also excludes this possibility. Flow explains that the system is brand new and tests have shown that the critical bacteria value in the water after the filter is lower than in the pool.

Finally, the last track considered would be that the bacteria entered the pool from the outside. This is the most likely lead according to Flow. “Bacteria are currently more likely to enter the pool from the outside, via the fill water,” the organization explains.

The water used to fill the swimming pool comes from the regional network. The organization is therefore currently checking whether the bacterium comes from the pipes connecting the regional water pipes to the outdoor swimming pool and whether it is present in the drinking water network.
