Numismatics: Receive when shopping at Migros: 100 times more valuable Ten-Räppler
While shopping, a Facebook user found an old ten centime coin that is many times more valuable to collectors than its face value. An expert explains which vintages are particularly valuable.

This ten centime coin dates from 1902 and is much more valuable to collectors than its face value.

A Facebook user advertised a ten centime coin from 1902 for 50 francs.
-
According to a numismatist, however, one of these is worth a maximum of ten francs.

The professional explains why the fewest coins were minted in 1896. Due to their rarity, their value is in the five-digit range.
“Ten centime piece from 1902. What value does it have?” writes a Facebook user in an Eastern Swiss sales group and advertises this more than 100-year-old coin directly for 50 francs. The seller doesn’t seem to have received a suitable offer for a few days. 20 Minutes asked professional numismaticist* Marcel Häberling how much the ten-räppler is really worth among collectors.
A numismatist (also coinologist) is someone who collects and researches coins and banknotes and is interested in their history, art and economic aspects.
This is how the coin value is determined
“50 francs is at the limit of respectability,” says Häberling regarding the ad and knows from the first glance at the photo: “This coin is slightly better than average. Its value is probably between five and a maximum of ten francs.”
The value results, on the one hand, from the circulation of the respective year – i.e. the fewer coins minted in a certain year, the more valuable the year – and on the other hand from the degree of preservation. “The collector is most fascinated when a coin that is over 100 years old is still freshly minted,” explains the coin professional.

If an older coin is still in good condition, it may be more valuable than its face value. Particular attention is paid to the contours and their degree of preservation.

This vintage is the most valuable
With a circulation of one million, ten-Räppler models from 1902 are not really rare. This requirement is more of the rule. Things looked different in 1896. Only 16 ten-räpplers were minted and the value is calculated accordingly: collectors pay between 15,000 and 20,000 francs for this rarity.
In general, very few coins were minted in 1896 and Marcel Häberling knows why: “On the occasion of the Swiss National Exhibition, honorary coins were issued to selected people, such as politicians.” Anyone hoping to find one of these rarities by chance must be very lucky. “I think most of them were never in circulation. A few fiver at most. Five francs was a lot of money back then and for some people it was too good to keep at home,” said the numismatist. After all, with a print run of 2,000 pieces, the chance of getting your hands on one is greater than that of finding a ten-wheeler of the same age.
