Uncovering Puerto Rico’s Hidden History: Ancient Cave Drawings and the True Timeline of the Island

A drawing resembling an African lion was discovered in a cave on the island of Puerto Rico. According to the latest study, the first inhabitants appeared on the island earlier than European estimates suggest. The history of Puerto Rico is still largely unknown, and the dates of colonization are completely inaccurate. Differences in traditional beliefs and historical timelines inspired geophysicist Angel Acosta-Colon to use scientific techniques to better understand cave drawings and their origins. So far, 11 caves have been selected that contain ancient drawings from different eras of Puerto Rico’s history. They then collected samples of the pigments used to create the drawings to determine when the artworks were made. They took samples from a total of 61 pigments, from which it was determined that people lived on the island thousands of years before the European invasion. Angel Acosta-Colon next to the drawings found in the cave. For the researchers, the most surprising find was a drawing found in one of the caves, which depicted an African lion, because lions do not live on the island (and in principle they never did). After the team ran the test, it turned out that the picture was probably drawn sometime in the 1500s. According to the researchers, the most reasonable explanation for this might be that the Spanish brought African slaves to the island and they might draw the mysterious lion. According to current research, the island was inhabited from around the 2nd millennium BC, and the ancestors of the Indians who welcomed Christopher Columbus arrived around 1000. However, according to the research team, people lived on the island before. “When we think of the history of Puerto Rio, the European version comes to mind first. But the research is direct evidence that the history of the island did not begin with the European invasion, but much, much earlier,” concludes Acosta-Colon.
