Uncovering Identity Crisis: The Truth About Shredded ID Cards Found in Smugglers’ Vehicles

Dresden – Emergency services near Dippoldiswalde (Saxony) stopped a Seat Alhambra with 15 presumably Turkish citizens on board in July. The Ukrainian smuggler Valerii L. (27) has now been sentenced to three years in prison.

The floor of the vehicle was covered with shredded ID cards. Who the 15 people are and where they are today is unclear. And this is not an isolated case!

Heiko Teggatz (50), chairman of the Federal Police Union, told BILD: “It happens very often that we find torn documents in smugglers’ vehicles. Local residents and even mushroom pickers also report passport finds in the forest. Around 95 percent of those apprehended have no proof of identity.”

Possible reason: Refugees need ID cards to get from their home countries to the EU. On the other hand, anyone who is caught with their papers in Germany can also be deported more easily.

Heiko Teggatz: “Especially in view of the situation in the Middle East, there is a risk that people who are not planning anything good in Germany will mingle with the refugees. I would have liked the border controls now installed to have been made possible much earlier.”

Dozens of refugees are currently being picked up every day in Saxony and Bavaria – following entering the country they are searched by the federal police. “Even babies and small children are patted down in the presence of their parents to find any documents or cash. We have also found torn documents in bushes and wastebaskets at the scene of the attack,” says Steffen Ehrlich (61) from the Federal Police Inspectorate.

When establishing identity, the officials have to rely on the information provided by the refugees. “In addition, everyone is fingerprinted. They are saved and can be compared across Europe and even internationally. “So far, this is our only way of determining who the people who entered the country are,” says Heiko Teggatz.
