Uncovering Historical Inaccuracies in “The Hussar Ballad”: The True Story of Nadezhda Durova

Some mistakes are glaring.

It is generally accepted that The Hussar Ballad is based on a true story. In the Russian Empire there was a so-called “cavalry maiden” Nadezhda Durova, who pretended to be a young man in order to take part in hostilities. However, in fact, the creators have deviated greatly from this image.

The screenwriter and author of the play “A Long Time Ago”, Alexander Gladkov, admitted that the real Durova was in no way suitable for a cheerful comedy. So he had to use fiction. In fact, the only thing left in the plot was the cross-dressing story.

The track record of a real cavalrywoman began with the Cossack regiment. After that, she ended up with the lancers, where she introduced herself as Alexander Sokolov. For the sake of participating in hostilities, the woman voluntarily abandoned family life: she was left with a husband and son, with whom she did not maintain relations. Her fate was more like a drama than a comedy.

A historical blunder crept into one of the funny scenes of “The Hussar Ballad.” When the lieutenant and Shurochka first met, Rzhevsky made an interesting remark.

“And the uniform you’re wearing, as I see it, is from Pavlograd,” – he declared authoritatively.

But in fact, Shura was wearing the uniform of the Sumy Regiment. It was impossible to identify yourself, because Pavlogradsky had a green tint. By the way, the lieutenant himself was dressed in the colors of the Mariupol regiment.
