The most commonly used preservatives in the cosmetic industry, in addition to parabens, are the first to be imidazolidinyl trea and diazolidinyl trea—they have been confirmed by The American Academy of Dermatology , is the main cause of skin inflammation.
There are two other chemical preservatives, Germall II and Germall 115, which are not very good at killing bacteria, so they must be mixed with other preservatives. Both chemicals are toxic, with Germall 115 releasing formaldehyde at temperatures above 37°C.
◆ methyl (methyl), propyl (propyl), ethyl benzoate (ethyl paraben)
It is mainly used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and prolong the shelf life of products. Although these few ingredients are widely used by the cosmetics industry, they are highly toxic and can cause allergic reactions.
◆ Petrolatum (petrolatum)
A mineral oil that tends to cause many problems when used on the skin. Petrolatum can make the skin more prone to sunburn, interfere with the body’s natural moisturizing mechanism, and lead to dry and rough skin. Using cosmetics that contain petrolatum is often counterproductive. The cosmetics industry uses petrolatum because the raw material is very cheap.
◆ Propylene glycol
It was originally a very ideal substance, which is a mixture of vegetable glycerin (vegetable glycerin) and grain alcohol (grain alcohol) natural substances. However, propylene glycol is mostly artificial petrochemical products nowadays, and it acts as an emulsifier in cosmetics, which can easily cause allergic and toxic reactions.
◆ PVP / VA heteromolecular polymer (PVP / VA copolymer)
Chemicals that break down from petroleum are often used in hair sprays, perms, and other cosmetic products. Not only is this substance toxic, but its particles may even accumulate in the lungs.
◆ Alkyl sulfate (sodium lauryl sulfate)
This is an artificial surfactant used to create foam. This substance can irritate the eyes, cause skin rashes, hair loss, allergic reactions, and more. Some cosmetics often like to label this ingredient as “from coconut” to falsely claim that the raw materials of the product are from natural sources.
◆Stearalkonium chloride
A chemical that can cause an allergic reaction and is commonly found in conditioners and lotions. This raw material was originally a fabric fiber softener in a fabric factory. Because it is cheaper than protein and natural herbs, it is often used in conditioners, but this substance is toxic.
◆ Artificial pigments
All kinds of artificial pigments that can make people more “beautiful” should be avoided as much as possible. Usually artificial colors are marked on the product as precipitated pigments (FD&C) or pigments (D&C), followed by the color name and number, such as FD&C Red No. 6 or D&C Green No. 6. Research confirms that artificial paints can cause cancer.
◆ Artificial fragrance
There are more than 400 kinds of artificial fragrances used in cosmetics. However, the word “fragrance” is only generally marked on cosmetics, so that people have no way of knowing the chemical ingredients in it.
These chemicals can cause a variety of problems, including headaches, dizziness, rashes, hyperpigmentation, severe coughing, and skin irritation. When cosmetics do not clearly label the raw material ingredients, but only indicate “fragrance”, the product usually contains artificial fragrance, and it is best to stay away from this kind of cosmetics.
◆ Triethanolamine
Cosmetic manufacturers often use triethanolamine to balance the pH of their products. Many manufacturers also use triethanolamine to convert the acidity of fatty acid into stearate, which is used as the basic raw material for cleaning products.
However, triethanolamine can trigger many allergic reactions in the eyes, hair and skin. In addition, if triethanolamine is absorbed for a long time, toxins will be produced in the body.
