In a German TV documentary, serious allegations are made once morest the local directors Paulus Manker and Julian Pölsler. The NDR film “Against Silence,” which is already available online, addresses abuse of power and attacks in theater and film. Those affected describe humiliating and violent situations, as several media reports. The film will be broadcast on NDR on March 11th at 10 p.m.

One of the actors who speaks in it is Manuel Bräuer, who worked with Manker. He shouted in almost every stage direction, often with insults. Other performers also report physical attacks. Such accusations once morest Manker, who celebrated great success with productions such as “The Last Days of Mankind” and “Alma,” are not new. However, he did not comment to NDR reporters Zita Zengerling and Kira Gantner, who researched their film for three years and spoke to more than 200 people. According to NDR, Manker declined an interview and instead his lawyer announced a lawsuit for defamation of reputation.

“Against Silence” also discusses allegations once morest Julian Pölsler, who is known for his “Polt” films. He is accused of verbally abusive behavior during filming, as well as not maintaining distances and non-consensual touching. He also did not want to comment on this to NDR, but his lawyer rejected the allegations.

The Academy of Austrian Film and local filmmakers emphasized in a joint broadcast on Wednesday that the film industry is “undergoing a structural and awareness change” and referred to the intensified efforts in recent years to create a “fair and dignified working environment” and contact points (including #we_do! and vera*), consultations, training and awareness-raising events. “We want to actively assume our responsibility and therefore strongly support the numerous and valuable initiatives that the industry has launched in recent years to constantly improve occupational safety, child protection and measures to prevent abuse of power and sexual assault,” said Verena Altenberger and Arash T. Riahi, who currently hold the academy presidency, are quoted.
