Tehran: The uncle of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman who died while in police custody in Iran, has reportedly been sentenced to five years and four months in prison. Rights organizations said the action was for criticizing the government.

The charges include anti-government propaganda, insulting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and participating in protests in violation of internal security. He was arrested last September.

The death of 22-year-old Mahsa led to mass protests in Iran. Mahsa, who was arrested by the morality police on the charge of not wearing hijab, suffered a head injury while in custody. Mahsa, who was unconscious, died on 16 September 2022 while undergoing treatment. It was alleged that the cause of death was a blow to the head while in custody. Later, anti-hijab protests broke out against the government for women’s rights. In Iran, women who violate the requirement to wear a headscarf are severely punished. Over 500 people were killed and over 20,000 arrested in clashes with security forces during the protests.
