Slaughter in First Avenuethe first live album by Uncle Acid and the Deadbeatsruns a whopping 86 minutes and is still limited to the essentials – to the raw, sweaty leaning back aura of heavy rocking psych-doom.
As a compilation of two shows, which took place in 2019 and 2022 in the eponymous First Avenue took place in Minneapolis, the band’s approach is correspondingly pragmatic: “People have been asking for a live record, and sometimes it’s nice to give people what they want. Especially if you follow it up with something they definitely don’t want! Overall it’s a very raw-sounding recording, and that’s just how it was on the night. There was no specific reason for choosing the first show, other than some guy just turned up and offered to record it, so we let him! It’s a proper live record with all the mistakes kept in.“ Bandkopf Kevin Starrweiter: „The second show had a few different songs so it made sense to add those in. The first show was better, though. I remember the crowd was pretty wild that night. The second show was more subdued and a bit looser. That was just as gigs started happening once more, so I think people were still a bit cautious. Either that or all the wild ones had died!”
In fact, following the somewhat sobering start, the compilation feels sympathetic I See Through Youwhich indulges in a damn long intro (“Tonight you will be subjected to an all-out audio assault that will begin here shortly. There will be no respite from this until we release you. The group will show no mercy, and will likely not communicate with you. There will be no dynamics and a complete disregard for expectation. It will all sound the same. Do you understand?”) and whose high-pitched vocals, despite successful harmonies, first have to warm you up (especially in the sometimes even latently sluggish opening phase of Slaughter in First Avenuebut beyond that) overall less excessive than rather damn casually hanging out, relaxed grooving in an almost comfortable heaviness – infinitely cool engaging, but at least as a sound document (despite some rousing interim announcements) only partially intoxicating or gripping.
The song selection succeeds solidly as a sovereign cross-section of the previous discography from (probably scored a bit too benevolently in relation to the previous work) Wasteland is there with Blood Runner, I See Through You, No Return and Shockwave City as well as four songs from the strongest studio album Blood Lustby a latently tired Death‘s Door, I‘ll Cut You Down as well as the famous Thirteen Candles and Ritual Knife is represented with little euphoria.
material from The Night Creeper (Pusher Mana horny overlong Slow Death, Waiting for Blood), Vol. 1 (Crystal Spiders as well as the highlights Dead Eyes of London) and that which has grown over the years and has been put into perspective by its successors Mind Control (Desert Ceremony) fill the room in a pleasantly unembellished way, work as a very good booster for the upcoming studio album – which will probably not be long in coming: “Yes, There will be another record which will hopefully appear at some point without warning or explanation,” says Starr. “It will be completely different to anything else we’ve done. You can think of it as a late-night detour. Its appeal will be extremely limited but that’s OK… ‘When you’re slapped, you’ll take it and like it!’“
