“Will there be layoffs due to low turnover? » “What statuses for fixed-term and permanent contracts? » “Can we expect investments in work tools? » The days pass and questions continue to bubble up in the heads of employees of the Géant hypermarkets in Lorient and Lanester. Since the Casino group entered into accelerated backup procedure at the end of October 2023, the 220 salespeople, checkout attendants and other warehouse workers are asking questions. A sale to the Auchan and Intermarché group might change everything.
“We feel abandoned”
Three years ago, they were among the essential elements for the functioning of the economy during the doldrums of the pandemic. Today, employees of Géant hypermarkets feel “abandoned”, even “crucified”. “We are all disappointed, it’s anxiety-inducing, everyone is afraid of losing their job,” says an employee of the Lorient store. The latter “did not expect such a situation” and lists “a few resignations in recent months”, without directly correlating them with the uncertain future of the group. For the CFDT delegate of the Lanester Casino, “it is time for the page to turn”. If extraordinary CSEs have taken place in recent days, Stéphane Bocande and his comrades have “only heard of the changes to come but nothing official has been communicated yet”. So they wait while “preparing for what comes next”.
The future is all the more murky for the employees of the Géant Casino in Lorient-Monistrol, which is one of the 119 stores temporarily sold to the Intermarché Group last June, as announced by management. The objective is obviously to save money. The Casino group is in debt to the tune of 6.4 billion euros.
On the side of Lanester, not affected by the restructuring of a few months ago, an employee affirms that “the managers will provide more answers during January”.
A lack of information which poses a problem
“The problem is that most of the information is gleaned from the media,” protests Stéphane Bocande, who denounces a lack of transparency from the hierarchy. At the Lorient hypermarket, “some customers provide more information to employees than management,” regrets an internal source. The latter wishes to underline “the warmth expressed by customers who provide necessary support”.

The CGT alarmed
“We need to stick together more than ever,” says Rémi Hamon, general secretary of the CGT local union in Lorient. The worst scenario for the union representative would be “a national cut-out sale” which might impact the Lorient hypermarkets which, according to the CGT elected official, “might be doomed to disappear, the management wishing to abolish large-scale distribution, if we according to some leaks.
