Unbroken Greenland Ice: A Warning for Global Sea Levels

2023-07-24 04:34:06

UThe warning of the scientific world is once more that the ice in Greenland, which was thought to be made of unbroken ice, is strong. The study, published in the journal Science, claims that “Greenland is responding more sensitively to climate change than previously understood and that there is strong and definitive evidence for this. A large percentage of the Earth’s water is naturally preserved in the form of ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. The scientific community has already warned that if this melts, global sea levels will rise. The new study warns that Greenland’s ice remains at serious risk of melting irreversibly.” giving

Two years ago, the first Greenland ice core was excavated from a depth of 1,400 meters. However, it was rediscovered by accident. The researchers point out that it belongs to the marine isotope phase 11 and is dated to 4,24,000 to 3,74,000 years ago. The researchers used advanced luminescence technology and rare isotope analysis to study the available ice core. The luminescence analyzes were performed in the lab of Tammy Ritenor, a Utah State University scientist and co-author of the study. Pieces of rock and sand from the ice core sediment were analyzed for a “luminescence signal.” Sunlight nullifies their signal through wind or water, before they are buried once more under snow or rock.

The isotope analysis was performed in the lab of UVM scientist Paul Bierman, who led the study. Here, the ice core sediment was found to have been exposed to sunlight for 14,000 years before being deposited under the ice. This means that following 14,000 years the ice in Greenland is so strong that sunlight reaches the land, researchers warn. About 23 feet of global sea level rise is associated with this ice. Thus, Greenland’s ice melt puts entire coastal areas around the world under threat. 4000 years ago there were no cities to speak of on the coast. But today, Ritenour points out, the fact that cities all over the world have sprung up on the ocean floor doubles the concern.
