Unbridled Vision: The Artist’s Quest for Authentic Expression

With a long-winded ghostly minor, the black-clad notes of the pentagram mournfully trumpet from Saturday 5/10/2024, to reverently honor with their evocative requiem, the master of the Art, the pioneer of Greek music, who rose after a century of life, for the Pantheon of Greek Culture.

Mimis Plessas left the piano alone on stage, but his immortal work will forever resonate in the hearts and collective subconscious of the Greeks.

Mimis Plessas: Tomorrow Wednesday is the last goodbye

Patras had crossed paths many times with his artistic companions: On April 19, 2010, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Chemistry by the University of Patras, while for his contribution, he was honored by the Municipality of Patras, the Municipality of Rio, the University of Patras, the Hellenic Open University and other bodies.

He had collaborated with the “Thanasis Tsipinakis” Night String Orchestra, the Polyphonic Choir, the Patraiki Mandolinata, etc.
While as a chemist, after invitations from his friend Professor Yiannis Matsoukas, he was present as an honored person from 2008 at the Conferences of the Medical Chemistry Program at the University of Patras.

November 2009: With the late conductor Thanasis Tsipinakis, in the concert he had given at the University Conference Hall, with the Night String Orchestra

At the same time, he had graced the pages of the “Peloponnisos” newspaper several times with his exclusive interviews-confessions.

In one of them, speaking to the signatory, Mimis Plessas had revealed the personal and artistic costs he paid from the partisanship, the ingratitude of the singers he benefited, the indifference of the State towards his work, but also the pension of an unskilled worker that he himself received!

Let’s recall some of his answers, in an interview he gave to “P”, on October 19, 2004:

Mimi Plessas

The late conductor Mimis Plessas

-You stubbornly refused and did not join any party bandwagon. Was it a choice that cost you artistically?

It cost me dearly along the way! Because no one ever referred to my presence or my works, since I had no special contract with any company. So my songs were known until recently, but as songs by Mouschouris, Vanos, Poulopoulos, Vogiatzis, Kourouklis, Marinellas, Koumiotis, Voskopoulos, Dionysiou, to name just a few of the “Plessopoulos” that I was lucky enough to accompany. But I didn’t care about that, because we don’t write the song so that they know that the song is ours and if we use these wonderful “tools”, which are the singers and actors, who transmit this sensitivity of ours, it is because so we can in the best way reach people’s hearts and enlighten them, or enlighten their minds.

– So many official events are constantly held by the State. I have never seen you called or honored. Why?

There are big events, set up on… stilts! There are propagandized events that are clearly the results of party-ocracy, or paleocracy. They will possibly have some shine when they are made. However, it is not the events that will judge the value of a work, but the universal time, which is inexhaustible. So if I, after 40 years, have managed to occupy 60% of the performed repertoire, everywhere in the country, I think it is a vindication. Which makes me forget the bitterness, which gives me the fact that I need to prove my honesty every time, so that I can have one of the big rooms, or one of the big spaces to play something new of mine. When someone, at the age of 22 to 25, has conducted the largest orchestras in the world, being self-taught, the only thing he does not envy is the one who is currently conducting one of the national orchestras and who is possibly afraid that if he calls Plessas he will “hoodwink” him. . There was never a time when I went abroad and did not come back with the first prize.

-Even at two big events held for Greek cinema, at the Concert Hall and Herodeion, you were not invited…

Yes, it’s true. I had no involvement, no position. In fact, my last suggestion to make all my film projects with a symphony got lost somewhere. Have you heard of the Bermuda Triangle? Here is the “Triangle of Chair Centaurs”! Within this triangle, proposals that have been submitted with the greatest clarity and correct dates often disappear.

– In Greece, creators are inferior to singers, who are largely credited with the success of a song. Why?

Your kind for asking this matter. First, because all creators, when they retire, have the unskilled worker’s pension! The great Alekos Sakellarios received, just as I do, an unskilled worker’s pension! Even if I still work and contribute to my pension fund, I can never get past the 12th grade because it never makes me more than… an unskilled laborer!

– Have there been singers to whom you gave timeless hits, and therefore timeless night jobs, and they “repaid” you with ingratitude?

But I think I am not the one who said the wise “fear the favored.

-Do you have bitterness about this behavior towards you?

Of course not, because I didn’t do it to be owed even a “happy birthday” phone call on my birthday. I did it to strengthen the wings of a talent I recognized and to make them the pride of the Greek pentagram.
