In 1996, Markus and Michael Gier from Rorschacher rowed a record lead to Olympic gold: Hunger made them aggressive
A lightweight double scull has never been more dominant in an Olympic final than the Bodensee brothers in Atlanta in 1996. However, lightweight rowing also means adhering to the weight limit.

Unity did not always prevail in the brother team. But when it became important, they pulled together. The most important days in Markus and Michael Gier’s sporting lives were those at the end of July 1996 in the USA. On Lake Lanier, a dammed river in the state of Georgia near Atlanta, the world champions had to live up to their role as favorites. They did it on a grand scale. They survived the prelims and the semi-finals without ever having to go to the limit over the 2000 meters.
