MIAMI, Fla. – Rookie quarterback Will Levis orchestrated two offensive drives for touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, and the Tennessee Titans posted an improbable 28-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
The Dolphins, yet comfortably in control with a priority of 14 points and less than five minutes on the clock, suffered their first loss in six home games this season.
Since 2016, no team trailing by 14 points in the last three minutes of a game has won, with the cumulative record of clubs in such a situation being 0-767 over the last seven campaigns.
This impressive sequence is now a thing of the past.
Levis helped give Tennessee some hope by rushing 75 yards before connecting with DeAndre Hopkins on a three-yard touchdown run with 2:40 left. What followed was a two-point post-touchdown conversion to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.
The young quarterback took the ball back almost immediately, courtesy of a Dolphins possession with just 25 seconds left, and got back to work right away, picking off Hopkins 36 yards to lead the Titans in Dolphins territory.
Three plays later, running back Derrick Henry ran into the end zone for three yards for his second touchdown of the night, and Nick Folk ensured the visitors’ one-point lead.
Mike McDaniel’s team regained possession with 1:49 left, and following getting a first down, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took a sack on fourth down with two yards to go.
On the field and the bench of the Titans (5-8), there was an explosion of joy within the group whose chances of playing in the playoffs remain slim despite this incredible comeback.
Stunned, the Dolphins (9-4) therefore miss their opportunity to return to the level of the Baltimore Ravens (10-3), at the top of the American association rankings.
Hill winces in pain, but avoids the worst
Miami fans held their breath in the first quarter when their star offensive player Tyreek Hill appeared to seriously injure his knee, the result of a tackle near the sidelines following a catch.
Grimacing in pain, Hill returned to his team’s locker room, fueling speculation regarding his state of health. “Cheetah” was available following the break, however; he finished his night of work with four receptions for 61 yards.
With four games remaining, Hill’s total catch yards stand at 1,542, 168 fewer than his career best (1,710 last year).
The offensive star of the game for Miami was running back Raheem Mostert, who recorded 92 yards rushing, in addition to scoring two touchdowns on distances of three and five yards in the fourth quarter.
Defensive lineman Zach Sieler had an interception brought back for a touchdown at the expense of Levis.
Mostert’s second major made it 27-13 with 4:34 left in the duel, but the Titans had not said their last word.
