Unbearable Hospital Heat: Lack of Air Conditioning Raises Concerns at Arnaud de Villeneuve

Because of the infrastructure of the establishment, the latter cannot be equipped with air conditioners according to the CGT, which has raised the problem for a year already.

“My partner stayed 15 days in intensive care, he was already very bad. And when we took him to the full hospitalization room in the pulmonology department last week, arriving around 6:30 p.m., it was already 29.7 degrees in the room, “explains Emilie Peenaert. Hospitalized for a long covid, her spouse went through many hospitals before that of Arnaud de Villeneuve. “And it’s the first time I’ve seen that, she continues. The next day, they gave us a fan, but it brews hot air”.

“We stayed in the hallway to be cool”

During the day, the temperature even reached 30.4 degrees. If she alerted the caregivers, the latter find themselves in the same situation, without the possibility of acting. “We found ourselves staying in the hallways, in front of the office of the secretaries who have air conditioning, to be cooler. Speaking with the caregivers, they explained to me that they put a wet towel on their fan to try to cool off a little, “says the patient’s attendant.

Emilie’s partner found himself on life support in a room over 30 degrees. DR

A story confirmed by Pierre Renard, nurse at the Montpellier University Hospital and CGT staff representative. “Some put ice packs in their pockets to cool off,” he reports. Unbearable hospital conditions for Emilie, who also demanded following two days that her spouse return to her home. “He was on life support in a room at 30 degrees. He was already not going strong, in addition he was breathing hot air and spending his time in the dark to avoid bringing in more heat,” she explains.

Blocks of ice in the pockets and UV film on the windows

A situation which, however, is not new. Already last year, the union had alerted management to the high temperatures. “In the cardiology department, temperatures reach up to 33 degrees in the corridors. There is nothing good in working or being treated in such conditions,” explains the union member. And if according to him, the infrastructure of the hospital does not allow the installation of air conditioning, he recognizes however that there have been some improvements. “The management has prioritized the sectors in relation to the population. So since this year, in the pediatric ward and in the caregivers’ room, there are mosquito nets and anti-UV films that have been installed. But it only decreases by two or three degrees. It stays hot, “he says. And if the maternity ward should also be equipped, the saturation of the rooms did not make it possible, because the equipment requires that the room be empty. “Afterwards, what is needed is for the state to put more resources into the Montpellier hospital, because these issues of high heat must be a priority,” concludes the union member.

When contacted, the hospital management did not respond to our requests.
