Unanswered Questions: The Mysterious Disappearance of Human Remains from the Titanic

More than a century following the famous ship sank, the Titanic continues to claim lives and remains a mystery in itself. Although various investigations and explorations have been carried out, there are still endless unanswered questions surrounding that fateful shipwreck, including the fact that the bodies were never found.

The Titanic’s hull is 3,800 meters deep in the middle of the ocean and that makes access difficult. In addition, this has hindered much of the exploration and research that has sought to be carried out.

The transatlantic vessel sank in 1912, but the first exploration to visualize its remains did not take place until 1985, thanks to the joint work of the American company Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the French underwater search company IFREMER.

It was then that they came across the surprise that, around the hull, there were no remains of the more than 1,160 people who perished in the depths of the ocean along with the Titanic. Not even his bones.

The reason for this event has tried to be explained by various experts, who have summarized the theories in two and we will explain them below.

WHY WERE HUMAN REMAINS NEVER FOUND ON THE TITANIC?

Corrosion over the years

As we mentioned earlier, due to the lack of technology at the beginning of the 20th century, the authorities at the time might not dive to such depths to recover the corpses and deliver them to their relatives.

It took regarding 73 years for a special submersible to enter the bottom of the ocean and take the first images of the remains of the Titanic.

For this reason, one of the main theories indicates that the corrosive elements of the environment, such as salt water, and extreme pressure have been able to completely destroy the human remains. Especially considering that the ship itself has signs of disintegration.

marine fauna

The second explanation has to do with the marine fauna found in these depths, since it is known that there is high animal activity (although they are lesser-known species), as well as bacteria never seen before.

These might have fed on human bodies by ingesting skin and other tissues.

However, it is not ruled out that inside the ship, there are still some human remains such as bone structures.
