UNAM expels students who occupied DGCCH offices

MEXICO CITY.- The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced the expulsion of a group of students who took over and vandalized administrative facilities within Ciudad Universitaria.

The students occupied the offices of the Directorate of the Colleges of Science and Humanities (DGCCH).

Students take over DGCCH offices for months

On May 22, protesters took over the DGCCH in protest of the death of a student from the Faculty of Higher Education (FES) Acatlán during a confrontation between thug groups.

Students complained that university authorities have not taken any steps to resolve the problem posed by these groups.

The DGCCH offices were occupied by students from May 22 to July 25.

In its statement, the UNAM He said that the occupation of its offices caused serious damage to the university’s assets.

Vandalism and destruction of buildings and furniture was reported, as well as the theft of numerous documents.

During the two months of occupation they also took over adjacent spaces, such as the General Directorate of Budget and the headquarters of the Area Academic Councils.

“Vandalism was widespread in the occupied facilities,” UNAM reported.

The damages recorded include graffiti and holes in walls and ceilings; smashed doors and windows; destroyed security cameras; loose floors; and unusable furniture.

UNAM expels students who occupied the CU

This Friday, UNAM reported that seven students who participated in the illegal occupation of the offices in University City (CU) were expelled.

“Based on the existing evidence, they were referred to the University Court for the completion of disciplinary proceedings in accordance with university legislation and with due respect for their constitutional rights.”

Their identities were not released.

However, it was reported that two were assigned to the Faculty of Philosophy and Lettersand two others in Political and Social Sciences.

The other three were students of the faculties Iztacala Higher Education; of Higher Education Aragonas well as the National School of Social Work.

“All of them have been duly notified by the University’s legal offices, and the files have been kept.”

“This university does not tolerate conduct that violates university activities and affects the heritage that Mexican society has placed under the protection of the Universidad de la Nación,” he concluded.
