Brussels Airport was not spared by the strong winds of storm Eunice. Part of the roof of terminal A at Zaventem airport would have come off due to the violent gusts.
“There were no casualties. A security perimeter was set up on the tarmac and inside the building. An area was closed to passengers and staff”confirmed the spokeswoman for Brussels Airport on Friday evening.
On Friday evening, air traffic was interrupted due to the danger involved. “Current weather conditions make operations hazardous. Therefore, no flights are currently departing,” the airport said on Twitter.
Some passengers were stranded for several hours before they might disembark. Conditions “totally unacceptable”according to one of the stranded passengers.
“The boarding bridges cannot be used during strong gusts because they are too dangerous. The handling capacity is in the hands of the handlers”, justified the company on Twitter.
Delays once more this Saturday morning
And if the storm Eunice has indeed left the country, delays still persist this Saturday morning. In any case, this is what some passengers say, stranded and delayed at the airport.
“Unbelievable! Stuck for more than 45 minutes already at Brussels Airport because no bus is available to take us to the terminal. Storm Eunice has already ended since yesterday but is still used as an excuse for this “delay”. It’s outrageous from the airport of the capital of Europe“, said a passenger.
For its part, the airport ensures that the situation is normalized, even if limited delays may still persist this Saturday. “The damage to the roof is being assessed. There is still a perimeter on the tarmac which means that some gates and stands cannot be used,” said Ihsane Chioua Lekhli, the airport spokeswoman.
