SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A tropical depression brought heavy rain to southern South Korea and the densely populated Seoul area on Wednesday after weakening and losing tropical storm status.

The water depth in some areas of the southern mainland and Jeju Island is 10 to 17 centimeters (3.9 to 6.6 inches). As of Wednesday morning, water levels had reached 10 to 12 centimeters (3.9 to 4.7 inches) in parts of the capital.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Jondari made landfall on Wednesday morning, and the South Korean weather agency said the system was still weakening.

The weather has warmed up in the afternoon and people can walk in the streets.

There were no reports of injuries as of Tuesday afternoon. About 20 vehicles were damaged by flooding in the southern town of Ulju, the nearby city of Ulsan and the central city of Seosan, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Interior and Safety. Emergency crews also received multiple calls about flooding of buildings and homes, the ministry added.

Government officials are urging people to monitor areas with a higher risk of flooding, such as pedestrian underpasses and basements.

Dozens of roads, parking lots and many parks were closed.
