“UN Warns of Record-Breaking Heat: 2023-2027 to be the Hottest Five-Year Period in History”

Geneva: The United Nations has warned that the five-year period from 2023 to 2027 will be the warmest on record as the combination of greenhouse gases and El Niño might cause temperatures to soar. NDTV reported that the World Meteorological Organization under the UN has informed that it is more likely to experience more heat in the coming years than what was announced in the Paris Climate Agreement regarding global warming.

The eight warmest years on record were between 2015 and 2022. The temperature will be higher than that in the next five years. The WMO predicts an increase in warming for the entire period from 2023 to 2027, or for any one year in particular.

The International Meteorological Organization said there was a 66 percent chance that the annual global surface temperature would remain above 1.5 degrees Celsius for at least one year. Temperatures might rise by 1.1 C to 1.8 C over the next five years. However, WMO also says that this temperature may not continue permanently in the world.

The finding suggests that an El Niño phenomenon will grow and develop in the coming months, which, combined with human-induced climate change, will push global temperatures to unprecedented extremes. This will have far-reaching implications in the areas of health, food security, water management and the environment. WMO also warned that the countries of the world should be prepared for that.

El Niño is a large-scale warming of surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. This weather phenomenon usually occurs every two to seven years. Despite the La Niña phenomenon which reduces the air temperature, many places have experienced high temperatures in the past three years.

Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are three greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and increase global warming.
