After the devastating floods in Libya, the UN Emergency Relief Office (OCHA) is concerned regarding two more dams behind which large amounts of water are expected to accumulate. It’s regarding the Jasa Dam between the partially destroyed city of Darna and Benghazi and the Kattara Dam near Benghazi, as OCHA announced on Sunday evening. Reports regarding the situation are contradictory. According to the authorities, both dams are in good condition and functioning.
According to authorities, pumps will be installed at the Jasa Dam to relieve the pressure on the dam, according to OCHA. Darna was hit hard following last Sunday’s severe storm, particularly when two dams broke. Thousands of people have died and thousands are still missing. The authorities do not yet have exact figures.
According to estimates by the UN Migration Agency (IOM), a total of more than 40,000 people have lost their homes as a result of the disaster in northeast Libya. The number is probably significantly higher. Counts have not yet been possible in many of the hard-hit areas. The World Food Program (WFP) is preparing food deliveries to support 100,000 people in the disaster area for at least three months.
According to Libyan authorities, four members of a Greek rescue team and three members of a Libyan family were killed in a car accident in the disaster area. A minibus carrying 19 Greek emergency workers collided with the car of a Libyan family of five, reported Othman Abdel Jalil, the health minister for the Libyan authorities in the eastern part of the country. A total of 15 people were injured, some seriously.
The Greek Foreign Ministry confirmed on Sunday that Greek emergency workers had an accident on their way to the Libyan port city of Darna, without giving details. The Greek consulate in Benghazi, the EU and the United Nations are ready to help.
