Ahead of emergency UN Security Council meeting, US calls on members to ‘strongly condemn’ Hamas attack

Before the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which is to be held behind closed doors on Sunday evening to discuss the situation in the Middle East, the United States calls on all members of the latter to oppose the Hamas offensive once morest Israel. “We hope that all members of the Council will strongly condemn what happened” and Israel, “these heinous terrorist acts”declared Deputy American Ambassador Robert Wood to the press.

He noted that it was not at this stage a question of ” statement “ advice. According to diplomatic sources, Council members are considering issuing a joint statement, but discussions are difficult.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun said China was ” in favour “ of such a declaration. “We condemn all attacks once morest civilians,” he said, emphasizing at the same time the need for a return to a peace process to achieve a two-state solution.

Israel officially declared war on Hamas on Sunday following the unprecedented offensive launched the day before by the Palestinian Islamist movement from the Gaza Strip, the death toll of which rose to more than a thousand deaths in total.

Israel a “one and only request” for the UN Security Council, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan said: “Hamas’ war crimes must be unequivocally condemned”.

“Regrettably, for some media and politicians, history only begins when Israelis are killed”responded Palestinian Ambassador Ryiad Mansour, who represents the Palestinian Authority and not Hamas. “We will never accept rhetoric that denigrates our humanity and denies our rights, rhetoric that ignores the occupation of our land and the oppression of our people”he added, profusely: “The time has come to tell Israel to change course, and that there is a path to peace in which neither Palestinians nor Israelis are killed”.

The Security Council, regularly divided on this issue, denounced Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories last January, believing that they jeopardized the two-state solution. This was the Council’s first decision on this issue in six years. In December 2016, for the first time since 1979, the Council called on Israel to stop colonization in the Palestinian territories.
