The UN Security Council is meeting in New York on Tuesday to protect Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis heads it. IAEA Director General Rafael Marino Grossi will provide information on the current situation.

The safety of civilian nuclear power plants in conflict regions is a key issue for Switzerland, as stated in a press release by the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on Monday. Cassis has therefore been in close contact with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Marino Grossi, in connection with the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia for months.

The aim of the May 30 Council meeting is to encourage the parties involved to comply with the IAEA’s nuclear safety principles. The aim is to avoid the risk of a nuclear catastrophe at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

The nuclear power plant is located in the immediate vicinity of the front line near the Russian-occupied city of Enerhodar in south-eastern Ukraine. Combat operations are a direct threat to the nuclear power plant, a nuclear accident would have far-reaching humanitarian and ecological consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for the European continent.

Switzerland is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2023 and 2024. She will hold the presidency of the Council for a month in May. The role is primarily of a protocol nature. Switzerland will take up the presidency for the second time in October 2024.
