Comment on the photo, UN Security Council meets to discuss Gaza war
The Reuters news agency reported that the United Nations General Assembly might vote next Friday on a draft resolution recognizing the eligibility of Palestinians to become full members of the international organization and recommending that the Security Council “reconsider positively the question.”
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, said the draft General Assembly resolution recognizing that Palestinians are eligible for full membership in the United Nations contradicts the United Nations Founding Charter and would grant de facto Palestinians have the status and right to establish a state.
The ambassador added: “If approved, I hope that the United States will completely stop funding the United Nations and its institutions, in accordance with American law,” indicating that the adoption by the General Assembly will not change nothing on the ground.
Under U.S. law, Washington cannot fund any U.N. organization that grants full membership to a group that does not exhibit the “internationally recognized characteristics” of a state. The United States stopped funding the United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO, in 2011 following the Palestinians became full members.
“The American view remains that the path to statehood for the Palestinian people is through direct negotiations,” said Nate Evans, spokesman for the American mission to the United Nations.
It adds: “We are aware of the decision and reiterate our concerns regarding any efforts to provide certain benefits to the entities while there remain unresolved questions regarding whether Palestinians currently meet the standards set out in the Charter. »
The United States is estimated to provide regarding a third of the UN budget.
