According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Africa, on January 27, during a meeting to discuss how to develop the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), many members of United Nations Security Council emphasized the impossibility of maintaining the “status quo” of the Mission.
The Security Council, which will decide on the extension of MINUSMA in June, first considered the report by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which stressed that the mission would not stand if continued. continues to remain in its current form and does not increase the number of green berets. The report recommends troop withdrawal if key conditions are not met.
French Deputy Ambassador Nathalie Broadhurst commented: “The next few months are decisive for the future of MINUSMA. As the Secretary-General has pointed out, keeping the status quo is not an option.”
She also believes that the future of the Mission depends on “clear commitments” and “concrete actions” from the Malian government.
The United Nations has been particularly critical of the impediments to the freedom of movement of MINUSMA troops, a factor believed to be key for some members of the Security Council in maintaining the Mission.

Deputy US Ambassador Richard Mills said: “The continued obstruction of mission and violation of the Force Regulations Agreement compels the Security Council to seriously reconsider its support for MINUSMA in its current form. .”
The report by Secretary General Guterres notes that the security situation continues to deteriorate and that the Mission, currently without the support of foreign forces, especially from France, which withdrew its forces from Mali in Last August, was faced with a difficult challenge.
The report also outlines several options to remedy this situation.
For his part, Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop stated that the proposals “do not take into account the legitimate expectations of the Malian people, who face security options”.
