On July 1, local time, during his visit to Haiti, UN Secretary-General Guterres called on the international community to continue to support the country and send a strong international force to help the Haitian National Police Force.

This is Guterres’ first visit to Haiti since he became the Secretary-General of the United Nations. During the visit, Guterres will meet with local officials including the Haitian Prime Minister.

Earlier, UN World Food Program executive director Cindy McCain and UNICEF executive director Katherine Russell had visited Haiti. After visiting Haiti, Russell said that the international community needs to take immediate action to resolve the crisis Haiti is facing.

According to the United Nations survey, Haiti is currently facing three major crises: security, politics and economy. From January to April 2023, more than 1,400 people died in violent incidents in Haiti. The rising number of murders and kidnappings has seriously threatened the personal safety of local civilians. According to data released by UNICEF on June 15, nearly 3 million Haitian children will need humanitarian assistance in 2023, a record high. (Headquarters reporter Lei Xiangping)
