Israeli government spokesman David Mencer has made disparaging and dangerous remarks regarding the commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini.
“Now if the UN did what it is supposed to do, Philippe Lazzarini should be one of the good guys, but he is not. He is one of the bad guys. A terrorist sympathizer. An enabler of the killing of Jews. A liar,” Mencer said in a video recording of his speech regarding the UNRWA chief.
UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the Israeli spokesman’s comments were unacceptable and dangerous.
“Using the inflammatory language that he used to describe Mr. Lazzarini and I don’t want to repeat it. But they’re there in an environment that is already very unstable. It’s reprehensible and it’s really dangerous,” Dujarric said of Mencer’s remarks.
“This puts at risk senior UN officials whose sole focus is helping civilians in Gaza to alleviate their suffering,” he said.
Al-Jazeera reported earlier on the UN’s reaction to the dangerous and disparaging remarks made by Israeli government spokesman David Mencer regarding UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.
It is no secret that Israel does not like UNRWA. But the personal nature of the raid was certainly shocking and, according to the UN, put Lazzarini’s personal safety at risk.
