TRIPOLI, May 31 (Xinhua) — Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily and Speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives Aguila Saleh on Wednesday stressed the importance for a legal committee Libyan government to urgently draw up electoral laws.

During a meeting in Al-Koubba (east), they discussed recent political developments in the country and the progress of the 6+6 commission in charge of drafting the electoral laws, agreeing that it was essential to complete this task as soon as possible and to ensure that these laws are applicable, tweeted Mr. Bathily.

They also agreed that inclusive and transparent elections were the only viable solution to overcome the current political crisis and build a solid foundation for a prosperous future for all Libyans.

“I asked the president (Saleh) to encourage the 6+6 commission to reserve its discussions for the Libyan people and the two chambers that authorized it and to make its announcement on Libyan soil as a sign of transparency and respect. “, said Mr. Bathily.

The 6+6 Commission is a mixed legislative body composed of six members of the High Council of State and six members of the House of Representatives, responsible for drafting laws for the next elections.

Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021, as originally planned, due to cross-party disagreements over electoral laws. Last January, Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbeibah declared that his government was ready to hold general elections in 2023.

Since the fall of leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has struggled to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and political divisions. END
